Yunus calls for mechanisms to ensure free, fair polls in Bangladesh

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called for the establishment of a mechanism that ensures all citizens in Bangladesh can vote freely and fairly, without fear or disruption. He made this statement during a one-on-one conversation with World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab at the annual meeting in Davos on Thursday.

During the discussion, Yunus shared the background of the July 2023 uprising, where students took to the streets demanding equal job opportunities. He spoke about the graffiti painted on Dhaka's walls, reflecting the students' hopes and desires. Yunus emphasized that many young voters, particularly those who became eligible in the last 16 years, have never had the chance to vote, which he described as "unfortunate."

Yunus outlined the reform agendas of the interim government, stressing the importance of understanding the people’s expectations before proceeding to elections. He suggested that the election could occur by the end of this year if people opt for quick reforms or be delayed if more extensive changes are needed.

Highlighting the power of the current generation, Yunus praised the youth’s global awareness, driven by technology, and reaffirmed his commitment to creating a "new Bangladesh." He also discussed the proposed "July Charter" and a consensus commission aimed at building national unity.

Klaus Schwab expressed his admiration for Yunus' speech and appreciated the productive half-hour conversation.
