Tarique Rahman urges restraint amid Bangladesh-India tensions

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has urged all Bangladeshis to exercise restraint and avoid reacting to provocations amidst rising tensions between Bangladesh and India.

In a post on his social media accounts (X and Facebook) today, Tarique Rahman noted a surge in inflammatory media commentary and political rhetoric against Bangladesh from certain Indian quarters following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

He expressed concern about the spread of misinformation creating an echo chamber that fuels anti-Bangladesh sentiment. "The recent attack on the Bangladeshi consulate in Agartala underscores how disinformation can destabilize relationships and sow division between neighboring countries," he stated.

Tarique underscored the need for international stakeholders to recognize that a destabilized Bangladesh, home to nearly 200 million people, is not in the interest of any nation.

He called for a deeper understanding of the events leading to Hasina’s ouster, the developments in Bangladesh since her departure to India, and the importance of strengthening ties between the peoples of Bangladesh and India, independent of any individual or political group.

Acknowledging the challenges Bangladesh faces, Tarique affirmed the country’s commitment to religious harmony, territorial sovereignty, and the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms, regardless of race, caste, or religion.
