The 89th birth anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the architect of multi-party democracy and founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is being observed today. 

Born on January 19, 1936, in Bagbari village of Bogura district, Ziaur Rahman played a pivotal role in Bangladesh's independence and later in the nation's political landscape.

Ziaur Rahman, a valiant freedom fighter and Bir Uttam, founded BNP in 1978. He was tragically assassinated in 1981. To commemorate his legacy, the BNP has organized a series of events. 

These include wreath-laying ceremonies at his grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, a discussion at the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh, and a cricket tournament at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

BNP leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, will participate in the day’s events, with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman joining the discussion virtually as chief guest. Additionally, political allies will hold their own discussions, and winter clothes will be distributed to the underprivileged.

The day will also see the hoisting of the BNP flag at its central office and across the country, with a special supplement published in the newspapers in honor of the occasion.
