HC rule hearing over compensating Ayaan's family March 5

The High Court has fixed a hearing for March 5 on a rule concerning compensation for the family of five-year-old Ayaan Ahmed, who died following a botched circumcision surgery at the United Medical College Hospital in the capital's Satarkul area.

A High Court division bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury passed the order today.

The child passed away on January 7, 2024, after complications from anesthesia during the procedure on December 31, 2023.

The family alleges that the hospital administered general anesthesia without proper consent.

A writ petition was filed on January 9, 2024, leading to the court's investigation order and the issuance of a rule asking why the family should not be awarded Tk 5 crore in compensation.

During today's hearing, Advocate ABM Shahjahan Akand Masum represented the petitioners, while senior advocate Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal and Barrister Jarin Rahman represented the hospital.

Deputy Attorney General Tanim Khan appeared for the state, and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir was present as an intervener.
