Bangladesh to import 130,000 tons of diesel from India

The government has decided to import 130,000 metric tons of diesel from India’s Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) during January to December 2025 worth Tk 1,137.96 crore.

The approval was passed on Tuesday (January 28) during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase, chaired by Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin, at the Secretariat in Dhaka.

According to sources, the proposal for importing refined fuel in 2025 was initially approved in principle at the Economic Affairs Committee meeting on November 7, 2024. Following negotiations, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division finalized the purchase from NRL under a long-term agreement.

The estimated cost of the diesel, with 0.005% sulfur content, is $93.28 million, equivalent to Tk 1,137.96 crore. The price per barrel is set at $5.50. The proposal was presented by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division and received unanimous approval from the committee.

Bangladesh has been importing diesel from India since 2016 under a 15-year agreement. Initially transported via rail wagons, the diesel is now supplied through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline, operational since March 18, 2023.
