CEC assures fair and credible elections

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections, saying all necessary measures are being taken to achieve this goal.

He made the remarks on Tuesday (January 28) after meeting with a delegation of democracy experts from the European Union (EU) at the Election Commission building in Agargaon.

CEC Nasir said: “EU delegation wanted to know about our readiness for the democratic transition, including voter registration and the timeline for preparations. They assured us of their support in this journey.”

He said the EU experts stressed the importance of a transparent electoral process and offered assistance as needed.

In response to inquiries about the type of support, CEC mentioned that the EU plans to send observers and conduct reviews to assess the situation.

“They want to monitor the elections as observers. We have assured them of our utmost commitment to holding free and fair elections,” he added.

CEC said, “We informed the delegation regarding our overall preparations and pledged to uphold the promise of fair elections. They appreciated our efforts and recognized our dedication to the process.”

“We have conveyed that the Election Commission’s independence, guaranteed by the Constitution, must remain intact. They appreciated this and acknowledged that a truly independent Election Commission is crucial to meeting the nation’s expectations,” said Nasir Uddin.

The meeting was attended by EU democracy experts Matt Beeken and Michael Lidder.
