DHAKA: Amar Desh destiny got darkened again as the Supreme Court`s Appellate Division Thursday stayed for four weeks the High Court order against the government action cancelling the declaration of the Bengali daily.

Chamber judge SK Sinha of the Appellate Division gave the order following a government petition. Meanwhile, the government was asked to submit a regular leave-to-appeal petition with the court.

The chamber judge passed the order after hearing the petition moved by Attorney-General Mahbubey Alam challenging the HC order.

Earlier on June 10, the HC stayed for three months the government action that cancelled the declaration of publication of the newspaper. And the paper kept coming out in the interregnum.  

Barrister Abdur Razzak and Barrister Rafiqul Haque along with other lawyers fought for the embroiled Amar Desh, whose acting editor is in jail following his arrest the night the newspaper was shut down.

After the SC verdict, the lawyers of Amar Desh told banglanews24.com.bd that the verdict “stopped further publication of the daily.”

Mahbubey Alam also told journalists, ”There is no other way for publishing the daily as the appellate division stayed the HC order of stay.”

The High Court on June 10 stayed the order of cancelling the declaration of the Bengali daily for three months.

The government cancelled the declaration of the daily newspaper on June 1 following a complaint filed by its publisher Hashmat Ali Hashu.

Acting Editor of the daily Mahmudur Rahman was arrested from its office in the early hours of June 2.
