Former DU Vice-Chancellor Arefin Siddique passes away

Former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU), Professor Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique, has passed away after being on life support at BIRDEM General Hospital in the capital.

Saifullah Siddique Tuhin, younger brother of Arefin Siddique confirmed the matter on Thursday (March 13)

According to family sources, Professor Siddique collapsed on March 6 afternoon, sustaining severe head injuries. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU and placed on ventilation. Despite doctors' best efforts, he could not recover and breathed his last today.

Meanwhile, hospital authorities confirmed media that Siddique passed away at 10:45 pm.

According to eyewitnesses, Siddique had withdrawn money from a bank booth around 2:15 PM before heading to the Dhaka Club in Ramna. While speaking with others at the club, he suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition until his passing.

Professor Arefin Siddique served as Dhaka University's 27th Vice-Chancellor from January 15, 2009, to September 4, 2017. He retired from teaching in June 2020 and was later appointed Chairman of the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Board of Directors in July of the same year.

His passing marks the end of an era in academia and journalism in Bangladesh. He will be remembered for his contributions to education and media.
