Dhaka, the overcrowded capital of Bangladesh, has again ranked as the fourth most polluted city globally, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 219 at 9 am on Friday. 

The air was classified as ‘very unhealthy,’ posing severe health risks to residents.

This dangerous air quality has persisted for several days, highlighting the urgent need for action to combat pollution. AQI readings of 201-300 are classified as ‘very unhealthy,’ while levels above 301 are considered hazardous. 

Dhaka’s ongoing air pollution issue typically worsens in winter and improves during the monsoon season.

Egypt’s Cairo, India’s Delhi, and Nepal’s Kathmandu topped the list, with AQI scores of 352, 242, and 231, respectively. 

The AQI measures pollution levels based on five key pollutants, including particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and ozone.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that air pollution contributes to seven million deaths worldwide annually, emphasizing the global health threat posed by poor air quality.
