Desh TV MD Arif Hasan remanded in murder case

A Dhaka court has granted a two-day remand for Arif Hasan, Managing Director (MD) of Desh TV, in connection with the attempted murder case of Sajib, a person involved in an anti-discrimination movement.

Judge Shaheen Reza of the Metropolitan Magistrate's Court approved the remand an Sunday (Nov 17).

Arif Hasan was presented before the court, where the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Abu Sayeed, requested a three-day remand. In the application, Sayeed referred to Arif Hasan as a financial supporter of the Awami League.

In response, defense lawyer Syed Zainal Abedin Mejbah, the Assistant Legal Secretary of the BNP’s National Executive Committee, filed for the cancellation of the remand and requested bail. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail plea and granted a two-day remand for Arif Hasan.

Earlier on Saturday night, immigration police detained Arif Hasan while he was attempting to leave the country. Upon receiving the information, airport police arrested him and brought him to the airport police station.

According to the case details, on July 19, during the anti-discrimination protests, Sajib was shot near Scholastica School in Uttara. He was later rushed to a hospital for treatment. Sajib's father filed an attempted murder case at the Airport Police Station.

Arif Hasan is also the General Secretary of the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO), an organization representing private TV channel owners in Bangladesh.
