Quota Issue: Science Lab to Shahbagh intersection immobilized

Students demonstrating for reformation of quota system in government job have immobilized Science Lab to Shahbagh intersection of the capital for the second consecutive day.

Around 4 pm on Monday, students from Dhaka University blocked the road under the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Chanting slogans against the quota system, several thousand students from Dhaka University and neighbouring institutions participated in the programme.

As per the pre-announced programme, students from Dhaka College and Eden College blocked the Science Lab intersection at 3:50 pm, causing a halt to vehicular movement in the New Market and Shahbagh areas.

The students said that they have no other demands at this moment.

Their sole demand is the abolition of the quota system, which they believe unfairly, advantages a specific group.

They also cited media reports about leaked Public Service Commission question papers as an additional grievance.

Meanwhile, leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) gathered at Madhur's Canteen on the Dhaka University campus.

Since 2:30 pm, BCL leaders and activists have been arriving at Madhu's Canteen in small processions from various residential halls.

However, they are not obstructing the quota reform movement.

Meanwhile, quota reform protesters at Jahangirnagar University blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway from 3:00 pm, causing long tailbacks on both sides, reports our correspondent.

Besides, similar demonstrations have also been held in different cities, including Rajshahi, Chattogram, Mymensingh, and Sylhet.
