Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has called on everyone to fulfill their tax and VAT obligations to contribute to the nation’s development and benefit from government services.
Underscoring the importance of compliance in revenue collection, he also said that participation in nation-building should be demonstrated through actions, such as paying income tax and VAT, which was introduced in 1991 and is practiced globally.
Speaking at a seminar marking ‘VAT Day and VAT Week 2024’ at NBR Bhaban in Agargaon, Dr. Salehuddin said, “For the government to function effectively, all citizens must contribute tangibly.
Proper tax compliance ensures uninterrupted public services and social benefits, even if not immediately visible.”
The event, presided over by NBR Chairman Md. Abdur Rahman Khan, also featured Finance Division Secretary Dr. Md. Khairuzzaman Mozumder and FBCCI Administrator Md. Hafizur Rahman as special guests.
Dr. Salehuddin underscored the need for public awareness and improved services, citing examples from North European and Scandinavian countries where citizens pay higher taxes for better benefits.
He put emphasis on the importance of compliance, warning that tax evasion harms future generations.
He urged the NBR to enforce laws vigilantly while remaining approachable and considerate of taxpayers’ concerns.
Addressing the low tax-to-GDP ratio, he said that with the country's transition from an LDC, the reliance on tax rebates and incentives must decrease to enhance competitiveness.
The adviser also emphasized the need for balanced tax collection efforts, avoiding coercion, and addressing grievances of affected businesses.
